Club President Jim Archer welcomed members to the meeting. This morning’s speaker, Ken Ward, was then introduced, the topic of his talk being “Cinema Advertisements in Coleraine”.
Ken’s talk revolved around the 1930 and 40’s period glass projection slides salvaged from the Picture Palace Cinema on Railway Road. These slides illustrated advertisements shown in local cinemas. The Picture Palace, funded by local businessmen with an investment of £800:00, opened in 1914, was refurbished in 1934 and closed in the 1970’s. The slides reflected the social attitudes and gender outlooks of the period. Ken’s light hearted and clever way of presentation delighted the club members who responded with helpful remarks and questions.
A brief summary of this talk is available in the speaker’s record book and
here on the club website.
A vote of thanks proposed by Norman Gallagher was passed on to Ken Ward by The President. The members showed their appreciation.
