Minutes of the meeting of Coleraine Probus Club
Attendance: 39 members were in attendance.

Apologies: Jim Gordon, Jack Henderson, Hammy Houston, Cecil Leitch, Ian Murray, Ernest Preece, Nigel Semple, Ross Torrens, Gordon Ward and Joe Wishart. (10)

The President Jim Archer welcomed members to the meeting. A special welcome was extended to new member, Derick Woods, who was presented with the Club badge, name badge and copy of the Coleraine Probus Club Constitution and Rules.

The President then introduced this morning’s speaker, Dr. Ron Elsdon, the topic of his talk being “In the Beginning”. Dr. Elsdon is a recently retired Church of Ireland Rector who prior to Ordination enjoyed a distinguished academic career as a Geologist in University College Dublin having studied Geology at Cambridge University.

A brief summary of this talk is available in the speakers’ record book and here on the club website. A vote of thanks proposed by Cecil Spotten was passed to the Rev. Dr. Elsdon by the President. The members showed their appreciation.

Weekly Business:
Minutes: Mike Turner proposed that the Minutes of 29th.November 2016 be taken as read. The members approved the proposal and the minutes were signed by the President.

Matters arising: None not covered by the agenda.

Correspondence: None.

Reports:
Social: Joe Alcorn reported that a good number of members and guests have signed up for the Christmas lunch on Tue. 13th Dec. Reggie Patterson confirmed that the pre-lunch entertainment will commence at 11:00 am with tea/coffee followed by the singing of a carol, a musical interlude finishing at 12:10 pm. with a final carol. The Golf Club staff will have 20 minutes to set up the lunch tables.

Welfare: Cecil Spotten said that he had nothing further to report.

Treasurer: An apology was received from Nigel Semple.

A.O.B. The President said that sadly today he has been informed of the death of honorary member Arthur Nicholl. Funeral service at 11:00am in no. 7 O’Hara Drive, Portstewart followed by internment at Castlerock Graveyard.

Next meeting: Will be held on Tuesday 3rd January 2017 when John McNally will speak on the subject of “Promoting Portrush’s Heritage.”

The President thanked members for attending and hoped to see everyone at the next Club meeting.
