Talk by James McDowell on 'The Birds of the Czech Republic'

Club President Gordon Ward welcomed members to the meeting and thanked our Vice President John Graham for standing in for him over the last two weeks. The President then went on to introduce our speaker for the morning Mr. James McDowell. James gave us an interesting and colourfully illustrated talk on the 'Birds of the Czech Republic'.
James began his talk by saying that he really wasn't a 'Public Speaker', but he was very interested in birds and photography, so he hoped the talk would be OK. For James, the next point to mention was why the Czech Republic? That really came down to having a friend (Ken Perry) who was very involved with a Christian environmental charity working in the Czech Republic, and whom was very good a persuading people to come along to help.

Talk by Rachel Bain on Biodiversity in the Coleraine Borough

Club Vice President John Graham, welcomed members to the meeting and then went on to introduce our speaker for the morning Ms. Rachel Bain, who is the Biodiversity Officer for Ballymoney, Coleraine & Moyle Councils. Rachel explained that her job is split over the four existing councils, thus covering a wide area, but at this meeting, she would be talking about Coleraine in particular.
Rachel started her talk by explaining just what 'Biodiversity' was - Very simply, biodiversity is the total variety of all living things. This includes people, plants, animals, fungi, micro-organisms, the habitats where they live and the ecosystem which they are part of. Biodiversity exists in many places from native oak woodland and coastal sand dunes, to places you least expect such as gardens and our many miles of roadside verges.

John was born in Wales and came to N. Ireland where he lectured in Geology at Magee from 1962 to '68 and then at the NUU in Coleraine. His topic for the meeting is very close to his heart. John is a member of the Portstewart Probus Club, so no stranger the giving talks and the Golf Club. John then went on to give a very detailed talk and PowerPoint presentation about 'The Aberfan Disaster of 1966'. He focused on the geological conditions of the area and the misplaced positioning of the mine spoil tips, the agent of disaster!
