Minutes of the meeting of Coleraine Probus Club

Attendance: 34 members.

The Club President, John Graham, welcomed members to the meeting. He hoped they all had an enjoyable summer break. On a more somber note he reminded those present that Probus Member John Springhall had died suddenly on 24 August 2015. John was a recent member, joining Probus on 3 March, and as a mark of Remembrance the President called on members to stand for one minutes silence.

The President then introduced our speaker for the morning, Mr David Martin, the topic of his talk being “Changing Times”. Coincidentally, David had known John Springhall as a young lecturer at the University and he recalled an amusing anecdote about John 'Springers' as he was known in those days.

A question and answer session followed the talk. A summary of this talk is available in the Speakers’ Record Book, and also on the Club Website (to read this just 'Click' here).

A vote of thinks proposed by Norman Maxwell was passed on to Mr Martin by the President. The members showed their appreciation for an amusing and enjoyable talk.

Weekly Business

Apologies: John Dobson, Jim Foote, Ivan Gough, Jim Hillis, Aubrey McElhinney, Des Moore, Ahmed Sharieff and John White.

Minutes: It was agreed by the members present that the Minutes of the 28 April 2015 be taken as read. These were duly signed by the President.

Matters arising: None not covered by the agenda.

Correspondence: None.

REPORTS:
Social: Joe Alcorn reminded members that the Club Lunch will be held on Tuesday 29 September 2015. Menus will be available at the next meeting on 8 September.

Welfare: Cecil Spotten reporting:-
John Dobson is out of hospital. He is not yet ready for visitors. John White now resides in Killowen House. Jim Foote is back home after a holiday in Donegall and is reasonably well.
Treasurer: Nigel Semple reported that the rental for the meeting room in the Golf Club has now increased to £20.00 per meeting. Current finances can meet this increase.

A O B: 1. Probus Ties
The President informed members that an order for New Probus ties is about to be placed and anyone wishing to order a tie should contact either Mike Turner or the Secretary as soon as possible.
2. Email Addresses
With the high cost of postage the President is hopeful that a comprehensive list of members email addresses can be compiled. These should be passed to the Hon Secretary. It is appreciated that some members do not have an email address.

Next Speakers Meeting: Will be held on Tuesday 8th September 2015 and the speaker will be Mr Peter Ferris on the subject of “Peter Ferris – Ultra Marathon Runner”.

The President thanked the members for attending and looked forward to seeing them at the next meeting on 8 September 2015.
