Speaker for 13th September 2016

Club President Jim Archer greets Elaine Way, with Club member Reggie Patterson (L) and Speakers Secretary John McKegney (R)

The President welcomed members to the meeting and this morning’s speaker, Elaine Way, was introduced. The topic of her talk being “The New Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital”.

Elaine Way has worked in health and social care since 1977. She was Chief Executive of Foyle, then Altnagelvin Trusts before being appointed the Chief Executive of the Western Trust in 2007. She has the responsibility for ensuring that the Board is empowered to govern the organisation and that the objectives it sets are accomplished. In Feb.2013 Elaine received the CBE from Prince Charles in recognition of her dedication to the promoting of health and care in the Western Trust, something of which Elaine is very proud.

Elaine gave a highly detailed account of the development and management of the new Radiotherapy Centre from its inception through to the fruition of the project. This was further enhanced by the Architects “Fly Through” video of the centre. The Centre will serve all Western Trust patients and those from the northern sector of the Northern Trust as well as patients from the catchment area of the Letterkenny Hospital in Co. Donegall. The project is now complete, in fact Elaine will receive the keys from the main contractors, McLaughlin and Harvey, when she returns this afternoon to Londonderry.

MacMillan Cancer Support will open an information and support centre which will operate in conjunction with the new Radiotherapy Unit.

Elaine is also passionate about opening a Graduate Medical Care Centre which will ensure the provision of fully trained Health Care Professionals for the local Health Trusts.

The members were certainly appreciative of Elaine’s presentation and a searching question and answer session followed the talk.

A vote of thanks proposed by Reggie Patterson was passed to Elaine by the President. The members showed their appreciation.
