14th October 2014 Minutes

Minutes of the meeting of Coleraine Probus Club
Held in Portstewart Golf Club on Tuesday 14h October 2014

Attendance: 37 members were present

Apologies: Jack Henderson, Norman Maxwell, Billy Platt, Tony Smyth and Joe Wishart (5)

Club President Gordon Ward welcomed members to the meeting and then went on to introduce and welcome back, our speaker for the morning Mr. Robert Park. Robert then went on to give a highly entertaining and interesting talk and slide show about a visit he made to 'The Skellig Islands' of the Kerry coast. A brief summary of this talk is available in the Speakers Record Book, and also on the club web site. A vote of thanks was proposed by John Graham and was passed on by the President. The members showed their appreciation.

Minutes: The minutes of the 7th October 2014 were read, agreed and signed.

Matters arising: None not covered by the agenda.

Correspondence: Giving Blood - The President had received a notice from the NI Blood Transfusion Service and Coleraine Rotary Club, that they were organising special 'Giving Blood' sessions on 20th and 21st October at the Coleraine Baptist Church Hall. Members were asked to either go along or encourage younger members of the family to give blood.

Social: The Secretary had Menus (thanks to Ivan Gough) for the meal on 28th October. Those wishing to go, please return you choice forms at the next meeting.

Welfare: Cecil Spotten reported that Arnold Carson had now been moved to a nursing home, and Jim Foote was making a slow recovery, although hindered by contracting a bug in the hospital.

A O B: 1. Trip to Bushmills - The President reported that arrangements had now been confirmed with the Bushmills Distillery and we would be having a Club trip out on Tuesday 25th November. We would aim for a care share transport with members living nearer to the clubhouse to aim to be in the Golf Club car park about 10.20 for transport. Other members may wish to go direct to Bushmills. All members should aim to be in the Distillery Car Park for 10.45. We would have a tea or coffee before taking the interesting Distillery conducted tour (possibly in two groups) followed by a product sampling. Members may then wish to stay for a lunch in the cafeteria (booking not required) or return home.
2. CPR Demonstration - The members were reminded that on the 21st October meeting there would be a special CPR Demonstration, and all wives and partners were invited to also attend. Dr. John McGlade gave a short talk on the importance of this secession, especially as members were unfortunately at the age when this sort of information was necessary to have. In order to make sure we had enough chairs set out, there was a show of hands for people aiming to bring along a guest, and this was about 20.

Next Speakers Meeting: Would be on 21st October, where the guest speaker / demonstrator would be Ms. Mandy Hunt

The President thanked members for attending and hoped that everyone would also be along next week for this important demonstration.

Meeting closed at 12.10 am
