Vice President Des Moore greets Graham Kane, with club Treasurer Nigel Semple (Far L) and member Jim Archer (L)
Coleraine Probus take a trip with Alec Guinness
The Vice President, Des Moore, introduced the morning’s speaker, club member Graham Kane, who told of his job “Driving Alec Guinness”
Graham’s talk gave an enthralling insight into his life between 1962 and 1965. As a young man seeking adventure and hoping to obtain a master’s certificate in sailing he enlisted as a crew member on the luxury yacht Clonsilla. It was here that he met Alec Guinness who offered him a post as chauffer and general handyman. Thus began the adventure into the world of A list celebrities. Based at Kettlebrook Meadows, the Guinness home in Hampshire, Graham journeyed with his employer from the Edinburgh Festival to the London Theatre Land. He found Alec Guinness to be a private animal loving man who did not seek the limelight. He was however a personable and brilliant actor who totally immersed himself into each acting role. The position of private secretary was offered to Graham but as he was recently married he decided it was time to settle back in N. Ireland.
A vote of thanks, proposed by Jim Archer, was passed to Graham by the Vice President. The members showed their appreciation of a journey into the land of “A” list celebrities.

As you will have guessed, the drawing, by Nicholas Volpe, was made just after Alec Guinness won an Oscar in 1957 for his role in the film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (and who DIDN'T see that one?! - WebEd)
