On October 4, 1988, the Inaugural meeting of the Coleraine Probus Club was held in the Lodge Hotel Coleraine.
Twenty five years have now passed and over these years the Club has grown to the extent it was in a position to host the 2014 All Ireland Probus Rally here in Coleraine with the assistance of other Probus clubs in the area.
A Rally Committee was set up under the Chairmanship of James Gordon. Months of hard work and detailed planning culminated with around 400 delegates and guests attending the Rally on May 28 and 29, 2014.
After registration on the 28th Delegates and Guests had the option of a guided Historical walk around Coleraine or a coach tour around the Causeway Coast for lunch in the Marine Hotel, Ballycastle.
In the evening there was a Mayoral Reception at which Mayor David Harding
welcomed guests. There then followed a splendid finger buffet with wine and soft drinks. This was augmented by the Old Bushmills Distillery hosting a most generous whiskey tasting. The evening was further enhanced by some delightful music provided by the Jazz Quartet with lead singer Joanna Higgins.
On the 29th there was a more formal agenda. The President, Gordon Ward, welcomed guests and handed over to Rally Chairman James Gordon who continued with greetings to members as did Deputy Mayor Fielding and Governor of Rotary District 1160 Philip Beggs. Probus Liaison Officer Mary Sinnamon then delivered two detailed reports from District Liaison Officers North and South highlighting the need to keep recruiting for, as she reminded members, clubs will 'die' if not.
Rotary Liaison Peter FitzGerald was presented with a' plaque for many years of distinguished long service.
After an excellent lunch James Nesbitt, Actor and Chancellor of the University of Ulster, gave a most entertaining talk, recalling his journey from childhood to the present day and how his acting career had evolved over all these years. This he illustrated with a fair slice of humour and was greatly enjoyed by the audience who gave him a standing ovation on leaving.
The proceedings concluded with Liam Ashe, from the Ennis Probus Club giving. a Presentation and invitation for the 2015 which his club will be hosting.
